FILLINGS

Composite resin filling material fills small or midsize cavities. Fillings are recommended when a damaged area involves bacterial decay or a fracture that’s larger than a chip. At Beechmont Smiles, we use white composite fillings that look natural and blend with your teeth.

Should I get composites instead of amalgams?

Other types of fillings use amalgam (metal filling), which has multiple disadvantages. First, amalgams expand and contract with temperature changes. Over time, stress from expansion can cause the tooth to crack and lead to additional treatment. Second, amalgams aren’t the color of a natural tooth. Many patients don’t like their grey appearance and tendency to discolor teeth over time.

Composite fillings offer an excellent alternative to amalgam and gold fillings. You may want to replace your old amalgam fillings with more esthetically pleasing composites. Modern composite fillings provide outstanding resistance to wear and fracture, along with a natural appearance.

How do I take care of fillings?

Good oral habits help prevent new decay from starting around existing fillings and sound surfaces. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once daily to remove bacteria.

Why might I need a filing?

Teeth can crack or decay for many reasons. Risk factors include:

  • Genetics

  • Mineral composition of teeth

  • Daily activities

  • Active cavities

  • Drug abuse

  • Overconsumption of alcohol

  • Bad oral hygiene

  • Eating disorders

  • Irregular dental visits

  • High levels of cavity-causing bacteria

  • Fillings

  • Head and neck radiation therapy

  • Poor diet / too much sugar

  • Consuming “hard” foods (popcorn kernels, seeds, nuts, ice, etc.)

  • Injuries or accidents

  • Tooth roots exposed

  • Defects of tooth enamel

  • Dry mouth

  • Clenching or grinding teeth

  • Biting nails, pens, or other objects

During Your Checkup

Dr. Maney checks all fillings and makes sure there’s no further decay. Digital X-rays provide critical information about the hidden areas beyond the eye. A thorough cleaning by our skilled hygienists helps prevent decay and gum disease and decreases the risk of systemic inflammation. Be sure to schedule checkups and cleanings regularly to reduce your risk of tooth decay and the need for fillings.
